Assess the surface
Identify the door material and existing coating. A wood door, a factory-finished metal door and fiberglass may need different preparation and compatible products. Paint does not correct a warped door, water damage or a failing component.
Agree on the painted areas
Specify faces, edges, frames, sidelights and adjacent trim. Ask how handles, locks, hinges, glass and weatherstripping will be protected or handled. Clarify repairs separately rather than assuming they are included.
Review color in place
View a sample in the actual light and beside the finishes that will remain. A door can be an accent without repeating every exterior color. For a coordinated update, review trim painting
at the same time.
Plan drying and access
Discuss the working sequence, access and security before starting. Ask when the door can close against weatherstripping and when it can be cleaned. Drying and curing depend on the coating and conditions, not a universal same-day promise.
