The starting point

The finish choice changes the preparation.

The proposal covered wood garage doors with an existing stained and varnished finish. It described a stripping, staining and varnishing route, then listed a separate solid-stain alternative.

These were distinct approaches. A homeowner could compare the desired appearance alongside the work required to prepare the surface, rather than treating every option as the same repaint.

Two documented approaches

Make the alternatives understandable.

Strip, stain and varnish

The main scope proposed chemically stripping the existing finish, applying stain, then applying a clear varnish in the homeowner's chosen finish.

The estimate also noted that some doors can need more than one round of stripping, depending on how stubborn the existing coating is.

Prepare for solid stain

The separately listed alternative proposed sanding away varnish, washing away dust and dirt, masking nearby surfaces, priming and applying a solid-bodied, nontransparent stain.

The option changes both the preparation sequence and the intended appearance. It should be selected deliberately rather than assumed to be included.

The Carroll approach

A clear estimate explains more than the final color.

This proposal connected the coating choice to the work underneath it. It distinguished the existing finish removal from the new finish application and acknowledged that stripping can take additional passes.

The practical takeaway

When comparing garage-door restoration plans, ask what happens to the existing coating, which new finish is proposed and how additional preparation will be discussed. The appearance you want and the condition of the surface belong in the same conversation.

Questions to bring to the walkthrough

Are the two approaches interchangeable?

No. This estimate described different preparation and finishing sequences. Discuss the desired appearance and existing surface before choosing a route.

Does this page show completed work?

No. It documents the proposal. No completed-project result is claimed.

What if the old finish takes more work to remove?

Ask how additional stripping or other preparation will be identified, explained and approved before the work proceeds.
